Panic
Panics are the representation of a Character's mental load pushed past its limits and the accompanying side effects. These side effects range from stress induced Headaches and Distraction all the way up to Sleepless nights and Hysteria, as seen in the table below.\\
\\
When prompted to generate a Panic roll a D100. The :Game Mechanics:Dice Pool:Result is your :Game Mechanics:Dice Pool:Total. Compare your :Game Mechanics:Dice Pool:Total to the Panic Table below. Once the Panic you would receive is known, apply any Upgrades or Downgrades such as those on the :Game Mechanics:Panic#Common Panic Upgrades and Downgrades Table below. You now may either accept the Panic and its effects or you may use Abilities, such as :Base Actions:"Not Today!", to alter the outcome.\\
\\
When generating a Panic you :Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade it for each previous Panic you have suffered in the current [Encounter]. A further :Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade is applied for each :Game Mechanics:Definitions:Scar you have.\\
\\
Should you suffer a Panic you have already received in the current [Encounter], :Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading#Upgrade your Panic until you recieve a Condition you have not already suffered this [Encounter].\\
\\
Lasting Panic is called Game Mechanics:Panic:Trauma. The effects of a Game Mechanics:Panic:Trauma stay with a :Character until it is removed through [Rest] or healed by a professional.\\
\\
Common Panic Upgrades and Downgrades Table
^ Type & Amount ^ Cause ^
| **:Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade once** | For each :Game Mechanics:Definitions:Scar a :Character has. |
| **:Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade once** | For each previous Panic suffered in an [Encounter]. |
| **:Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade once, twice or thrice** | When a Panic is inflicted by an :Game Mechanics:Definitions:Ability or Item with the :Traits:Stressful, :Traits:Traumatic or :Traits:Maddening :Traits. |
| **:Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Downgrade once** | From the :Traits:Composure, :Traits:Poise and :Traits:Stoic :Traits. |
**Example**: Jim the Enforcer has just been prompted to generate a Panic. Jim has already suffered 1 Panic in this [Encounter] so will :Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade his outcome once. Jim also has a pre-existing :Game Mechanics:Definitions:Scar so will :Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade his outcome an additional time. Jim rolls a :Game Mechanics:Dice Pool:Result of 65 on his D100. Consulting the Panic Table a :Game Mechanics:Dice Pool:Total of 65 would mean Jim suffers the effects of Depleted. Jim must :Game Mechanics:Upgrading or Downgrading:Upgrade this outcome twice and would instead suffer the effects of Heart Palpatations. Jim accepts the Panic, suffering the effects of Heart Palpatations.
**Please Note**: Panics are generally caused by being reduced to 0 Ratings:Strain or some instances of the :Game_Mechanics:Definitions:Property:Dangerous :Game Mechanics:Definitions:Property, see their pages for more information.
