Home System/Planet The Stoic Expanse, Kantkliff

The Oricalcai, also known as Craggies, Golems, Rockos and Pebs, hailing from Kantkliff in the Stoic Expanse are immense, mineral-bodied beings whose silhouette evokes the idea of a person only in the loosest sense. They stand between roughly 275 and 325 centimetres in height and carry extraordinary mass, commonly ranging from 800 to 1,000 kilograms. Beyond the presence of two limbs for locomotion, two for manipulation, and a central body mass, there is little uniformity. Some Oricalcai possess a distinct cranial structure, while others bear facial features directly upon the torso itself. Their forms are dictated not by biology as most species understand it, but by astral coherence and structural necessity.

Internally, Oricalcai possess no organs in any conventional sense. There are no systems dedicated solely to circulation, respiration, or digestion. Instead, their bodies function as unified mineral constructs animated by astral force. Speech and consumption occur through a simple opening — an orifice capable of grinding and absorbing stone and mineral matter. Visual perception is achieved through gem-like facets embedded in their bodies, crystalline structures that capture and refract light rather than focus it through lenses. Sensory awareness of vibration substitutes for hearing; the Oricalcai feel sound through their mass, detecting disturbances as subtle shifts carried through stone.

Their bodies are composed of a wide range of rock-like substances. Common stone, dense metals, rare ores, and crystalline growths often coexist within a single individual. These materials are not fixed; softer, surprisingly malleable mineral regions form joints and flexible interfaces between harder plates. From afar, these areas may resemble loose grit or flowing sand, but close inspection reveals them to be rock all the same — simply surprisingly flexible or arranged in a state that allows motion. Oricalcai bodies erode and fracture over time through impact and weather, yet this loss is balanced by growth. The minerals they consume are assimilated directly into their structure, slowly increasing mass.

Growth for the Oricalcai never truly ends. As individuals increase in size, the rate of expansion diminishes, spreading the same incremental mass over a growing surface. Eventually, most reach a state of equilibrium where environmental erosion roughly matches their capacity to grow, creating what other species might interpret as maturity. A change in environment can disrupt this balance, leading an Oricalcai to gain or shed mass over long spans of time, reshaping themselves in response to new conditions.

New Oricalcai emerge not through pairing, but through fragmentation. As living Oricalcai chip, crack, or shed pieces of themselves, some fragments become lodged in the ground. On rare occasions, these remnants take root, drawing sustenance from the surrounding stone and slowly assembling into juvenile forms. Even the Oricalcai do not fully understand this process. Many believe it is governed by fate rather than mechanism, noting that such growth most often occurs near established communities, though exceptions exist. Philosophically inclined and deeply spiritual, the Oricalcai debate endlessly whether new life arises from readiness, intention, or cosmic balance. They are a patient people, open to new ideas and perspectives, but slow to act—often content to discuss a moment until it has already passed.

Culture

Oricalcai culture is shaped almost entirely by inevitability — of stone, of time, and of survival without urgency. On Kantkliff, they evolved without meaningful predators and with bodies so resilient that physical harm was, for most of their history, effectively impossible. Even the colossal Olgoi-Khorkhoi that tunnels beneath the looser regions of their world poses little threat; it hunts by vibration and motion, and the Oricalcai are simply too slow and deliberate to draw its attention. More importantly, Oricalcai cannot meaningfully injure one another through force alone. As a result, they never developed instincts for panic, aggression, or pre-emptive violence. The concept is understood intellectually, but it does not arise naturally as a solution. Violence is not rejected on moral grounds—it is ignored because it is irrelevant.

In the absence of physical conflict, disagreement has always been resolved through discourse. Debate, philosophy, and prolonged contemplation form the backbone of Oricalcai society. They are a ponderous people who value reflection over action and growth over victory. Individual Oricalcai often commit themselves to specific ideals, philosophies, or personal codes with extreme dedication, living by them for hundreds or even thousands of Marks. Just as strikingly, it is culturally accepted — and often celebrated — when an individual abandons a long-held belief after centuries of adherence, having decided it no longer serves their understanding. Change, when it comes, is slow, deliberate, and profound.

Reproduction among the Oricalcai is asexual, and there is no sexual dimorphism. While they understand the concept of biological sex through observation of other life on Kantcliff, it holds no intrinsic meaning for them. As such, Oricalcai are one of the few known peoples to have developed complex ideas of identity and gender entirely independent of sex. Within Federation space, some adopt binary gender concepts out of convenience or cultural exchange, but many do not. Others embrace multiple identities, shift between them over time, or reject the framework altogether. This flexibility extends far beyond gender. Oricalcai readily adopt religions, philosophies, social roles, and traditions from other cultures, sometimes preserving them long after the originating peoples have changed or disappeared.

Because Oricalcai measure time in Epochs rather than Marks, they often become living archives of belief. Entire traditions have survived solely because an Oricalcai community found value in them and chose to carry them forward. It is not uncommon to find philosophies thought extinct elsewhere still practiced, debated, and refined within Oricalcai settlements. An example of this would be the Bushido lifestyle, from pre-spaceflight Humanity, rarely practiced by Humans but alive and well in many Oricalcai settlements and temples. In this way, their culture is less a single identity and more a geological record — layers of thought, belief, and meaning compressed together, shaped not by conflict or urgency, but by patience and the quiet certainty that there is always time to discuss it further.

Role in the Federation

The Oricalcai entry into Federation history began in misunderstanding and ended in tragedy. As Oricalcai explorers slowly expanded beyond Kantkliff, they encountered Federation-controlled regions along the border of dwarven space. What should have been a routine negotiation over mineral rights instead escalated into one of the darkest episodes in recorded interstellar history: the Geode Genocide. A mineral-dense asteroid cluster, already claimed and surveyed by the dwarven peoples, was settled upon by Oricalcai explorers who — unaware of ownership conventions — began harvesting the asteroids as sustenance and raw material for repairs. Communication failed due to different languages. First contact protocols were ignored. Unable to reach what they perceived as hostile trespassers and theives, the dwarven fleet opened fire.

The conflict escalated rapidly and catastrophically. Seeking to reclaim what they believed stolen, dwarven forces pushed onward to Kantkliff itself. The Oricalcai, who had no cultural framework for warfare and barely understood the concept of organized violence, offered little resistance. What followed was a brutally one-sided campaign, remembered as much for its imbalance as for its horror. Vast numbers of Oricalcai were destroyed before Federation intervention halted the assault. Reparations were eventually made, and formal apologies issued, but the event remains a stain on Federation history—frequently cited as the ultimate failure of first contact ethics.

In the Epochs since, the Oricalcai have become some of the Federation’s most steadfast contributors to its intellectual and civic life. Their patience, longevity, and innate preference for discourse over action have made them invaluable in politics, negotiation, education, and long-term research initiatives. Oricalcai are frequent patrons of academic institutions, particularly those devoted to philosophy, ethics, and metaphysical inquiry. Many serve as educators for generations at a time, teaching with a calm persistence that few shorter-lived peoples can sustain.

Culturally, the Oricalcai have developed strong affinities with the elven peoples, bonded by shared interests in art, spirituality, and extended lifespans that allow conversations to span ages rather than marks. They also share a simpliar temporal scale with the Troll and Draeck peoples, though these relationships tend to form on an individual basis rather than as broad cultural alliances, owing to fundamental differences in values and expression. Today, the Oricalcai stand as a reminder of the Federation’s capacity both for catastrophic error and for long, patient reconciliation — living monuments of stone who remember everything, and still choose to participate.

To further contribute meaningfully to the cultural, education and egalitarian economic systems that had ultimately sheltered them, the Oricalcai constructed a vast crystalline D’jumpship known as the Academ. Unlike other Homeships built for power projection or trade dominance, the Academ was conceived as a mobile center of learning — a traveling nexus for education, philosophy, and cultural exchange, in addition to tradition logistical support. It ferried scholars, artists, and students between worlds, often at little or no cost, fostering dialogue between peoples who might otherwise never meet. In doing so, it ignited a deep Oricalcai fascination with astrogation, vehicle design, and long-haul travel. From this cultural shift, across the modern, capitalist era, emerged Aureate Express, now the largest and most prestigious astromotive and courier service in the known universe, renowned for transforming interstellar travel from mere transit into an art form — slow, deliberate, and impeccable, much like the people who founded it.

Unique Features

"Too Big! You Pay Extra!"

Oricalcai are immense — unavoidably, inconveniently so. Their sheer mass and density make the world feel small around them: doorways are hazards, seating is a negotiation, and public spaces strain under their presence. Vehicles must be reinforced, transport fees scale sharply, and most environments are simply not designed with their weight in mind. Clothing and armour require full custom fabrication, tailored not just to size but to mineral structure, driving costs ever upward, and cyberware is no easier — interfaces must bridge stone to stone, reinforced to endure pressures that would crush lesser frames. To be Oricalcai is to carry the constant tax of scale: the price of being unmovable in a universe built for those who bend.

Trait.

You suffer a 50% price increase on Apparel and a 25% price increase on Cyberware, rounded up.

In addition, when calculating the [Total] number of [Crew] or [Passengers] on a [Vehicle], you also count as 2. However, you still only require a single [Console].

Furthermore, you may also suffer difficulties, where Appropriate, when traversing doorways, corridors, entering public vehicles and anywhere your size might be an issue. This may include but it not limited to being unable to fit, or using up more space or even suffering the effects of the [Disadvantage] Property.

Nigh Invincible

Oricalcai are stone given purpose. With no organs to rupture and bodies formed of layered mineral rather than fragile systems, they are extraordinarily difficult to injure in any meaningful way. Blows that would cripple others register as surface damage, pressure becomes weight to be borne, and time itself is a far greater threat than violence. This physical resilience is mirrored within: lacking an adrenal response, Oricalcai do not spiral into panic or shock, and emotional surges arrive slowly, if at all. They respond to crisis with contemplation rather than fear, absorbing stress the way stone absorbs heat. Where others break, Oricalcai endure — not through defiance, but through inevitability.

Trait.

You gain 4 Armour.

In addition, you gain the [Sturdy], [Rugged], [Composure] and [Poise] [Abilities].

Furthermore, you can survive the effects of a [Vacuum], or even underwater, because you do not breathe. You are effectively under the effects of a [Rebreather] at all times. You are immune to the Suffocating, Bleeding, Nauseated and the Poisoned [Afflictions].

Finally, you eat rocks and metals, as such, cannot eat the rations of other races. You still require Water. Due to your unique diet, it is incredibly easy to find rocks, minerals and metals to eat, and thus, it is extremely easy for you to survive in most biomes, provided there is a water source.

Mastery of Thought

Oricalcai are extremely difficult to harm or injure, as such their culture favours intellectual conflict and scholarly debate instead of physical violence.

Trait.

You gain Proficiency in Study.

In addition, you perform any and all Study Checks and [Attacks] under the effects of Advantage Property. If you would already be under the effects of the Advantage Property, then you [Upgrade] the Property instead.

Furthermore, you suffer the effects of the Disadvantage Property to all [Checks] and [Attacks] in a martial [Situation]. If you would already be under the effects of the [Disadvantage] Property, then you [Upgrade] the Property.

Indomitable Gait

Oricalcai do not hurry — but they also do not stop easily. Once set in motion, their immense mass and deliberate stride carry them forward with relentless certainty. Terrain offers resistance, not obstruction; debris shifts, ground yields, and obstacles are endured rather than avoided. While gravity and physics still apply, friction feels negotiable when weighed against a body measured in thousands of weight units. An Oricalcai bearing great loads or crossing hostile ground may never be fast, but they are inexorable. To stand before one in motion is to understand a simple truth: momentum, once earned, belongs to the stone.

Trait.

You are immune to external changes to your Speed.

Increases or decreases from changes to Stats, Cyberware, and Size are applied as normal, however, any other effects are not applied. This includes but is not limited to, Equipment, [Abilities], Terrain, Buffs or Debuffs.
