Stats

Stats are how your Character's physical, mental, social and magical capabilities are represented in gameplay. Stats come in in two varieties:

  • Mundane Stats to represent the portion of your Character tied to the Meat Space, their body, mind and senses.
  • Mystical Stats to represent the portion of your Character tied to fate, luck and the magical forces of the Astral Space.

Stats do many different things, and are generally very important for your Character's ability to interact with the game systems and world of [Meat Space]. Some examples include, but are not limited to, being added to Skills and Damage and contributing to Ratings.

Additonally each Stat has three important categories: Starter, Current and Maximum which are detailed below.

Starter Stats

Starter Stats are the Stats a Character has once [Character Creation] is finished. This includes any changes to Stats made during [Step 1] of [Character Creation].

Starter Stats are used to determine how much [Experience] is used to gain a rank in a Stat. See [Spending Experience] for more details.

Starter Stats only change when explicitly stated in rules such as but not limited to those found in [Cyberware] or [Masteries].

Example: Miles the Human begins [Character Creation] with a 5 in Agility and Brawn from being a Human. Miles increases his Agility by 2 and decreases his Brawn by 1 as part of [Step 1]. Miles the Human Ace finishes [Character Creation] with an Agility of 7 and a Brawn of 4, these are now his Starting Agility and Starting Brawn.

Current Stats

Current Stats are the amount of ranks in a Stat a Character has right now. This is the number used when a Stat is part of calculating Ratings, adding to Skills or any other use of a given Stat.

A Character's Current Stats can be increased by [Spending Experience]. See [Spending Experience] for more details.

Example: Miles the Human Ace has 7 ranks in Agility, this is both his Starter and Current Agility. Miles then spends 4 [Experience] to gain an additional rank of Agility. Miles now has a Current Agility of 8 and a Starter Agility of 7.

Maximum Stats

Maximum Stats are the upper limit of ranks a Character may gain in that Stat through [Spending Experience]. Maximum Stats are determined by your chosen Race during [Character Creation].

Maximum Stats only change when explicitly stated in rules such as but not limited to those found in [Cyberware] or [Masteries].

Example: Miles the Human Ace has a Current Agility of 8 and a Starter Agility of 7. Miles spends 8 [Experience] to go to rank 9 Agility. Since the Human Maximum Brawn is 9, Miles cannot increase his Agility by [Spending Experience] any more.

Mundane Stats

The meat of your Character, their physical presence in the world and how they interact with it. These Stats represent the qauntifiable scientifically present parts of your Character, how they exist in the Meat space.

Brawn

Brawn is a representation of your Character's raw physicality, their strength and toughness.

A Character with high Brawn is highly capable with most simple melee Weapons, able to utilise the heaviest arnaments and wear the most cumbersome Apparel. They're very resistant to physical trauma, and can move at surprising Speed. A Character with high Brawn is capable of installing more cyberware than the average Joe, their physical sturdiness withstanding the rigours of matching metal to meat.

Brawn is a key Stat for the following Ratings and Skills:

Agility

Agility is a representation of your Character's flexibility and dexterity, as well as their natural speed and grace.

A Character with high Agility will often be the the one to shoot first, dodge a fatal blow, and unleash a flurry of attacks or insults, they're also a deft hand with precision armaments and Weaponry that requires tight control.

Agility is a key Stat for the following Ratings and Skills:

Smarts

Smarts is a representation of your Character's ability to interpret, understand, and recall information. It is raw mental aptitude.

A Character high in Smarts is able to hold themselves together better in combat, being prepared for an oncoming firefight. Their knowledge of the astral makes them more resistant to offensive magics and their sharp mind more resilient against mental attacks.

Smarts is a key Stat for the following Ratings and Skills:

Wits

Wits is a representation of a Character's ability to piece information together, to intuit from those disparate pieces an answer or solution, taking from learned experiences and applying them in interesting new ways.

A Character with high Wits will get a quick grasp on surprising situations. They'll find the right moment to strike in an instant. They'll also be quick on their feet, seeing whats coming a moment before it happens.

Wits is a key Stat for the following Ratings and Skills:

Panache

Panache is a representation of a Character's flair and social cunning, their force of personality and strength of self.

A Character with high Panache finds it easier to charm and intimidate others. They are more resistant to magic as their strong will impresses itself on the [Astral Space]. They also find themselves brushing off even the most stressful situations.

Panache is a key Stat for the following Ratings and Skills:

Intuition

Intuition is a representation of a Character's read on a situation and a measure of their ability to see whats really going on around them, almost a touch of foresight.

A Character with high Intuition is able to react more quickly to sudden and surprising actions. They can foresee the right time to strike in-between the moves of others, they can almost see things before they happen, moving out of the way just in time. They're also less likely to be duped in negotiations or with subtle magics.

Intuition is a key Stat for the following Ratings and Skills:

Mystical Stats

The unseen forces of the universe acting both subtly and overt. Though fortune and astral might have biases among the Races, with practice and training they can be honed by anyone.

Grit

Grit is a representation of a Character's pure unfiltered [Luck] in the world.

A Character with high Grit will see more things go their way as the universe smiles upon them.

Mechanically each point of Grit adds to the maximum Grit Points a Character has. Each Grit Point may be spent on the 3 primary Actions below:

Hokum

Hokum is a representation of your Character's affinity for the astral winds and how much magical power they can store within themselves.

A Character with high Hokum will have a larger Mana pool from which to cast and counter [Spells].

Some useful [Spells] available to all of those with magic include:

Wyrd

Wyrd is a representation of a Character's path, their destiny, it is a measure of how much control an individual has over their fate.

A Character with high Wyrd seems to take horrific [Injury] after horrific [Injury] and yet receive nothing more than a scratch, looking one second as if they had lost an arm and with a blink the lost arm is just a nick on their shoulder.

Mechanically Wyrd is how a Character can avoid [injuries] and other bad outcomes through the "Not Today!" Free Action.

Wyrd and consequently Wyrd Points are a special resource in that they do not regenerate in anyway other than increasing Wyrd itself, once you are out of Wyrd Points, they're gone forever!

Wuntch's Whatever
Wyrd is MEANT to be spent, while yes this is an RPG and your character is yours to play, i would strongly recommend not hoarding their Wyrd like consumables in every elder scrolls play through ever :-P. Part of the fun and thrill I find in Meat Space, is the threat that your Character may meet their untimely end or perhaps lose a limb during any encounter, and that's ok. Go forth and spend that Wyrd when you need to, get to that last session and have one single point left that comes in at a critical moment when death is on the line and BAM! Chargog the Zerk miraculously survives the disintegration beam that would've turned him to so much dust! All this to say there can be a lot of fun in spending your resources, it can lead to game mechanics driving narrative tension and player excitement.
